Submission Guidelines
UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2023: Green Briar Review has returned from its long hiatus! We have reopened for submissions for a new issue, which will be published in late 2023/early 2024. Moving forward, GBR will be a prose-based journal, publishing fiction and nonfiction.
Green Briar Review accepts nonfiction, fiction, and photography/art. We are now also accepting cultural essays and reviews. Please submit only one piece of fiction and/or nonfiction at a time. Once you've heard back, feel free to submit again. We no longer use Submittable. We accept submissions, for free, at the associated fiction and nonfiction email addresses below.
Our response time can run from a few weeks to a few months. Feel free to query (info@thegreenbriarreview.com) after four months. We do not accept previously published material. We do accept, however, unsolicited simultaneous submissions, but please inform us immediately if the work has been accepted elsewhere. We may also solicit material on a rare occasion.
Green Briar Review simply asks for first serial rights and to keep your work in our archives online, with the potential—in the future (hopefully not so distant)—to publish your material in print (in which case you would be notified). All rights revert back to the author upon publication: you retain ownership of your work. If you do decide to reprint material we have published, please mention that the work first appeared in Green Briar Review. At this time, we are a non-paying market. We do not charge for submissions.
Nonfiction
We accept essays--lyrical, persuasive, personal, meditative--memoir, literary journalism, travel writing, or just about anything else you can classify as nonfiction. Just keep it under 6000 words. Please use size 12 font, Times New Roman, double spaced. Include, in the body of your email, a brief cover letter that lists your name, email address, and phone number. Please also include this information on the heading of your submission. Email your submission, as an attachment, to nonfiction@greenbriarreview.com.
Fiction
We accept short stories (up to 6000 words), but please no genre fiction (sci fi, romance, etc). Otherwise, we will read anything. We also accept short-shorts, microfiction, or whatever else you'd like to call it. Please use size 12 font, Times New Roman, double spaced. Include, in the body of your email, a brief cover letter that lists your name, email address, and phone number. Please also include this information on the heading of your submission. Email your submission, as an attachment, to fiction@greenbriarreview.com.
Photography/Art
